In Kyrgyzstan a toi is more than a celebration — it brings two families and their relatives together. A gift carries that meaning too: it helps the young family start their new life. What to give depends on who you are — a close relative, a friend or a colleague.
Home appliances — the most useful gift
A new household most often needs a multicooker, microwave, electric kettle, blender, vacuum cleaner or iron. Big gifts (a fridge, a washing machine) are usually given jointly by close relatives. To avoid duplicates, ask the couple or their parents in advance whether there is a list.
Textiles and bedding
- A quality bedding set.
- A warm duvet and pillows.
- A set of towels.
- A shyrdak or tush kiyiz — a traditional, meaningful gift that adorns the home.
Tableware
- A tea set — in a Kyrgyz home guests are always welcomed with tea.
- A kazan — the first kazan in a new home has symbolic meaning. How to choose: how to choose a kazan.
- Knife and pan sets.
Jewellery
Close relatives give the bride gold or silver jewellery. Kyrgyz silverwork makes a special and memorable gift.
Money
Money is the most common wedding gift and the most practical for the couple: they decide what they need. Put it in a nice envelope and hand it over with warm wishes.
Etiquette tips
- Prepare the gift in advance — there’s no time for shopping on the day of the toi.
- It’s easier to deliver big gifts to the couple’s home rather than to the banquet hall.
- Add a card or a letter with your wishes.
- Keep the receipt — if an appliance is duplicated, it can be exchanged.
Delivery
If the toi is in another city, have the order delivered straight to the couple’s address. Check delivery times by region on the delivery page and order with a little time to spare.
