The mountains of Kyrgyzstan are one of the best places for a winter break. The country has more than ten ski resorts, most of them in the Chuy region (near Bishkek) and the Issyk-Kul region. The season usually runs from December to April, but opening depends on snowfall — check the slopes on the resort’s official page before you go.
Where to go
- Resorts near Bishkek (for example, Chunkurchak and ZIL) — ideal for a weekend, with a short drive. Chunkurchak has beginner slopes and several chairlifts.
- Karakol — the best-known resort, at the eastern end of Issyk-Kul. It lies at 2,300–3,040 metres and is known for long runs and good snow.
- Too-Ashuu — on the Bishkek–Osh road near the pass; in snowy years it is among the first to open.
Clothing: the three-layer rule
- Base layer — thermal underwear. Wicks moisture away. Cotton doesn’t work: it holds moisture and you get cold.
- Mid layer — a fleece or wool top. Keeps the warmth in.
- Outer layer — ski jacket and trousers. Waterproof and windproof. A membrane fabric is ideal.
Plus warm socks (not cotton), a balaclava or neck gaiter, and a hat or helmet liner.
Gear
- Goggles — sun and snow strain the eyes in the mountains.
- Helmet — essential for beginners and experienced skiers alike.
- Waterproof gloves — a spare pair never hurts.
- For your first time you can rent skis or a snowboard at the resort — try before you buy.
In your backpack
- Sunscreen (SPF 30+) and lip balm — the mountain sun is strong.
- A thermos of hot tea.
- A power bank — phones drain fast in the cold.
- A small first-aid kit and personal medicines.
- Some cash — cards or QR may not work everywhere.
Safety
- Pick runs that match your level; take an instructor on the first day.
- Don’t leave marked runs — there is a risk of avalanches.
- If you are driving, prepare the car for winter: winter tyres and snow chains. More in how to prepare your car for winter.
In the catalogue: winter sports, sportswear, outdoor gear.
