Electricity tariffs for households in Kyrgyzstan rose on 1 May 2026. According to the Ministry of Energy (excluding taxes):
- up to 700 kWh a month — 1.64 som per kWh;
- above 700 kWh — 2.94 som.
So it pays to stay within 700 kWh: every kilowatt above the limit costs almost twice as much. In winter, with heaters running, it is easy to go over. Here are practical ways to cut the bill.
Lighting
- Switch to LED bulbs. They use 75–85% less energy than incandescent bulbs and last much longer.
- Turn off the light when you leave a room. A simple habit that adds up over a year.
The fridge — the hardest-working appliance
- Keep the fridge away from the cooker, the radiator and direct sunlight.
- Clean the dust off the rear grille once or twice a year; leave at least 5–10 cm from the wall.
- Don’t put hot food inside — let it cool first.
- Check that the door seal closes tightly.
Heaters and winter
- Choose a heater with a thermostat: it switches off once the room is warm. An oil-filled radiator holds heat for a long time.
- Seal gaps in the windows and put a draught excluder under the door — that is where much of the heat escapes.
- Don’t overheat the bedroom at night — a warm duvet is cheaper.
Washing machine, kettle and more
- Wash at 30–40 °C and load the machine fully — most of the energy goes into heating water.
- Boil only as much water as you need.
- Unplug appliances you aren’t using or use an extension lead with a switch: standby mode also uses power.
When buying new appliances
When choosing a fridge, washing machine or air conditioner, look at the energy efficiency class (A+, A++, A+++). An efficient model may cost more but pays for itself within a few years. To help: how to choose a fridge. In the catalogue: home appliances, lighting, heaters.
